Cafecitos & Chismosa

Updated: Jun 2, 2023

Week 2: May 8th to May 14th

Mr. Gabo’s cafe is definitely one of my favorite spots in Trujillo. The amazing internet connection and calming energy was extremely useful while I was conducting my content analysis this week. Prior to starting my fieldwork, I wanted to make sure that I completed a strong content analysis, based on the Curricula of both the School District and the Colegio Jose Olaya. This is obviously extremely pertinent to the development of my project. Tuesday, I went to Huanchaco to begin exploring the pharmacies and bodegas where students could potentially access and purchase sex-related products, such as lube, emergency contraceptives, and condoms. This was a very good (and risky) decision, given that these topics are extremely taboo.

However, one pharmacist enlightened me with his strong opinions, stories, and life experiences that put a lot of my research into perspective while grounding it in sexual education and medical anthropological theory. The following day was my first day of fieldwork at Colegio Jose Olaya, where I got to meet several students and begin my observation. This was an extremely scary experience, but I know that observing this classroom is definitely going to be for the better in the long-run. Some of the students are not used to my presence yet, but as an anthropologist, any interaction with them is extremely valuable. This Friday and Saturday, I have the opportunity to explore the nightlife in Trujillo with one of my friends! I look forward to all the adventures that have yet to come!
